ER2 Flies High with Graphic Wraps at O’Hare International Airport

Over 79 million people passed through O’Hare last year. That’s what we call an outstanding advertising opportunity! How do you catch the eye of all those business-focused travelers and excited vacationers? How about wrapping your message around every column in Terminal 3? Think that’s a great idea? So did Emerson, a global technology and engineering company. That’s why we’ve printed their column wraps for O’Hare the last three years.

Tech Talk

Actually, the graphics themselves are sturdy enough to last for 3-5 years. We print them on our HP 3600, which is a latex ink device. Latex inks do well in terms of UV durability and print a wider color range than other ink technologies. The wraps were printed on 3M IJ3555, which is a self-adhesive vinyl that leaves little to no residue behind upon removal. The wraps are replaced yearly, not due to wear, but to update Emerson’s advertising message. Our friends at DDB Worldwide and Classic Color handled the design and graphics work for Emerson. ER2 came in to partner on production and final installation at ORD.

Airport Installations Get a Little…Complicated

As you can imagine, installing signage in one of the busiest airports in the world involves its very own set of unique challenges, not the least of which is security. We are one (of only a handful) of graphic installation companies authorized to work at O’Hare. This involves being sponsored by one of a handful of vetted companies and an extensive background check for all employees being badge

The installation had to take place between the hours of 8pm and 7am per airport restrictions. One challenge was that the columns at O’Hare are not perfectly round, so lining up the front and back of the panels takes experience and patience. Luckily, our installation crew Michal Mieczkowski, Jacek Lukasiewicz, Arek Marciniak, and Chris Lemle are solid professionals. They installed the graphics on all 32 columns in the terminal in only three nights. There was no shortage of coffee!

Kudos All Around

Emerson was thrilled with the final product. O’Hare was pleased that the installation was done on time with a minimum of disruption in the terminal. Emerson’s brand new graphics will convey their marketing message to millions over the next 12 months. And whether they know it or not, those same travelers will be admiring the craftmanship of our team of professionals. We hope to see more work at ORD in the near future.
