The Old Post Office represents an iconic landmark for Chicago, as millions drive under it as they enter the downtown area. However, the building had become a sleeping giant, largely abandoned for decades.

Fortunately, an $800 million renovation, the most significant historic redevelopment in the country, was about to change that.

Applied Surfaces, a division of ER2 Image Group, was selected to transform the interior of the Old Post Office into an inviting workplace for a new generation of major corporate tenants, such as UBER Freight.

One of the highlights of our work can be found in a Stamp Wall installed next to and over the building’s main escalators. Applied Surfaces printed 1000 images on birch wood, using a UV process to get the wood grain to show through to simulate a vintage postcard. We then meticulously planned the installation of every one of these dimensional pieces. Large frames and fabrics throughout of photos of the Old Post Office were also added.

In bringing the Old Chicago Post Office back to life, our team’s technical expertise and passion were on full display. We have succeeded in building an emotional connection with people and their work environment. They can feel good about the space they’re in and comfortable in the space they have. And achieving that is practically as important as this building is to Chicago.
